Summary of Work So Far

dirty house photo
Finally, I'm putting the internet to good use. I've always felt bad for not using the net to it's full potential, and I'm sure that in it's vastness I never will. But at least what I am learning in Mpi104 will help me to contribute more.

Google has some amazing products. I have used Gmail for a while now, simply because it does not send you to a home page full of all jammed full of all sorts of information that I don't want to know about when I'm trying to send an email. I firmly believe that the success of google, although the contributing factors are many, rests mainly on it's simplicity. I personally become boggled with too much going on, and google presents it's many applications in a manner that I can understand.
I regularly use Google Calender to help me keep my studying schedule simple. Email alerts are handy to let me know when things are coming up, like assignments etc.
I also use Google Docs on a daily basis. Mostly I only use it as a word processor for the moment, but I can see how useful it can be for sharing documents.
I have installed the 'share' tool onto my Google toolbar. With it you can share any page on the web with Gmail, Blogger, Delicious, Digg, Facebook and many more. A lot of sites have this sort of tool, but it makes it convenient for the ones which don't.
Google code will be interesting, but I don't want to try it until I get a better grasp of coding without the aid of any applications.

When we learnt about basic HTML and metatags, I went home and got stuck into the W3Schools site with visions of teaching myself how to create my own website. I was really excited and reasonably, but not fully, confident until I tried to create a comments page, and now I'm stuck. As soon as I get my head around javascript, all will be well again. Like the W3Schools website describe it, it is the same as arithmetic, but it's going to take me a while to remember which symbols to use for what. Lots of fun though.

We also created our own blog, which is good for using some HTML and CSS with, as I have tried, but without too many exciting outcomes yet. Except for the background, which I'm a bit proud of at the moment. It's a photo I took on my cheap old 1.4 mega pixel phone camera of the side of a skip bin at work one day.

Stephen Sitton on Blogger Stephen is an Illustrator.
Abbey Sunderland Abbey is making a world record attempt to sail solo around the world. And She's still got time to blog.

I have also added a links blog. A link to this blog can be found in the footer of the Peter Fraser blog.

We learned about Flickr and Delicious. I have found Flickr to be very useful as my wife is a photographer.

Flickr is a good networking tool as it is very popular and easy to use. A good use of metatags, or in this case 'folksomy' can help in advertising your work. Or just simply images that interest you. I edited my background image for my blog with Picnik, and then saved it on Flicker so that my HTML code could access it. So I can see how it all ties in together. I have 16 photos, most of which are my wife's work.
Delicious is a site that shares bookmarks, and is also good to access your own bookmarks when you aren't on your own computer. The only problem that I have with Delicious is that I can't group my bookmarks or at least have not found how to do that yet. I have 20 bookmarks. The ones that interest me most are:
http://www.w3schools.com because it is a helpful tutorial.
http://www.novafm.com.au/nova919/ A good variety of music.
http://www.imdb.com/ helps my reviews on movies I might have fallen asleep in.
